Customized flexible solar panel for Nissan Leaf hood

Solar panels, as an auxiliary charging system for the vehicle, have its own unique advantages. Recently, Sam, the owner of Nissan Leaf came to us and asked if we could custom a flexible solar panel for his car to generate electricity to a better battery life.

One advantage of customization is that it maximizes the use of space, making it more matching and beautiful.

You asked for it, and then we made it.

“Lensun Solar Team, My name is Sam Elliott, and I have a Youtube channel (Innovative Sustainable Solutions) where I explore the feasibility and methods for making solar powered commuter vehicles.  I had a viewer refer me to you.  As soon as I saw your custom panels I thought “bingo, that’s what I’ve been looking for……”.

In the communication after we got in touch, Sam provided relevant dimensions and more detailed information. According to the dimensions he provided, our engineer team designed the drawings and provided them to Sam for confirmation.

Everything is going on smoothly

.

In response to the design we made for him, Sam said::“That looks perfect!  Nice work, a 30% over what the hood panel is spec’d for currently too”

The below link is Sam’s video on our custom solar panels posted on his YouTube channel.

Soon, Sam will also provide more pictures after installation to share with us, and we will update them in real time. We will also continuously dedicate to provide designs and customized solar panels for more models.

If you happen to also want to do some DIY solar for your car, please feel free to contact us.

Customized 120W hood solar panel installation for Toyota FJ Cruiser

Many thanks to Nat’s share of the installation experience of Lensun 120W Flexible Hood Solar Panel for his Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Here the link to get it for your FJ!

https://www.lensunsolar.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=84&product_id=430

Special designed 2nd gen hood solar panel with two holes for washer nozzles is also available now at below link:

https://www.lensunsolar.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=84&product_id=455

Nat’s said: “My setup uses the existing BCDC charger to direct power to the Aux battery(100AH lead acid battery), but will also direct it to the main crank battery once the Aux is full (but only if it requires it).

The reason I went for a solar is so I can run a fridge and camp lighting for a multi-day camp trip. Means I don’t have to drive the car everyday while camping in order to charge the batteries.”

The followings installation details:

Here’s the underside of the panel. I’ve used the tape pictured below. It’s a high bond double-sided tape that’s also heat resistant. Around the edges I’ve used double (one strip on top of another) due to the small lip that goes around the panel. It’s actually a pale grey coloured tape and the blue is the bit you strip off before applying.

Below is the tape I used. Moroday Ultra High Bond double sided tape. 20mm thick.

I removed the washer nozzles and the grid panels in between the wiper blades.

I detached the water tubes from the washer nozzles before removing them. Notice I taped one extension to the main branch to help feed it though and under the wipers. Makes it much easier otherwise it catches on the way through.

Feeding the washer pipes through and under the wipers (I also fed it BEHIND the bonnet hinge) .The tubes ready to be connected to the new nozzles which will be positioned in the grids as shown below.

Nozzles I bought on eBay. They need to be able to angle up as much as possible to make up for not being further in front in the bonnet. (Your blanket with prefabricated holes won’t require any of this if course).

I found nozzles with a nut that fit perfectly into the grate moulding (14mm).

The nozzle fixed in from the top side into the nut which is fixed underneath as shown above. I’ve set it as far forward (away from the window) as possible.

Attach the water tubes onto the nozzles and place the grates back into place (easy – held in with their own clips).

Notice the solar panel cable fits nicely under into the gap at the back of the bonnet.

And then feeds easily into the retaining clips that used to hold the washer tubes.  I have a BC-DC charger fixed between the radiator and the front grill. A custom bracket was used to fix the controller next to it and connected it the BC-DC which is already attached to my aux battery. So it’s all good to go. (The cable runs down behind the washer bottle and then behind and round to the front of the aux battery before routing to the front grill)

I’ve used Christmas clips to attach a 5mm heat insulation to the underside of the bonnet to prevent too much heat getting through to the panel. (Picked it up from a friend who does air conditioning). 6mm Christmas clips push easily through the insulation and into the factory holes already there. Easy as.

In a couple of places where there weren’t factory holes or I haven’t cut it right. I’ve used the same tape as above to fix it to the underside of the bonnet.

And looks sooooo good!

Customize flexible solar panel for Hummer H3 hood

Solar panels are becoming an indispensable part for people in overlanding, but many of the standard solar panels available on the market are not so suitable for mounting on the car’s hood, we received a Shawn’s email about his Hummer H3 hood Demand for custom solar panels. (If you want to buy the stardard solar panels just click link to shop http://www.lensunsolar.com/Flexible-solar-panel/Black-flexible-solar-panel.)

Thanks Shawn’s feedback of the flexible solar panel which we customed for his Hummer H3 hood, and share us his installation pictures.

1. Shawn located in the U.S., El paso, TX, USA, he contacted us this year and asked if we could custom a flexible solar for his Hummer H3’s hood.

“I am looking to install a flexible solar panel on my vehicle and was wondering if you are limited to just squares or rectangles. The dimensions are roughly. 35″ long x 34″ at the top tapering down to 31″ at the bottom. I currently have a 60 watt panel mounted on my roof rack and I want to clear up some space. I would like to keep the panel at about 50-80 watts, if it’s possible to squeeze more that would be awesome. I use it for long overland trips to keep a battery bank charged. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I can provide better dimensions, just wanted to see if this is feasible for you and also the cost.”

2. As our reqeust he sent us the size of his Hummer H3 hood

3. Our engineer team design the drawing as the size, 75W 18V Flexible Solar Panel

7. Shawn shared us his installation details

Shawn “I got the panels today they are great. I posted some on Instagram. Thank you for making these.”

“thanks for the custom panels. After a little trimming it fit perfectly in the hood. Didn’t have full sun today but I was getting 1.98 amps to my batteries with it being overcast. Couldn’t be happier with the end result. I will update this as time goes by. Thanks again!!”

“The panel is held in place with double side 3M tape, I did not put a piece of vinyl down before I placed the panel. It is attached straight to the hood.”

Lensun: Do you want to charge the original battery of the car or second battery? How much AMS is the battery?

Shawn: On the white H3, I have it set up for extended traveling. The buzz word in America right now is overlanding. This panel will keep auxiliary batteries charged and topped off. I have two optima yellow top 34 batteries(two AGM yellow top Optimum 55AH battries.) that run my fridge, and different accessories.

Lensun: Are you satisfied with our solar panels ?

Shawn: So far that are amazing, I am very pleased with them.

Customize flexible solar panel for Toyota 4Runner hood

We have some customers who bought and installed a Lensun 65w black flexible solar panel on their Toyota 4Runner‘s hood to charge their car battery or 2nd battery.

Why they do not install the solar panel on the roof but on the hood?

Because many people have sunroofs, racks, tents etc on the roof’s. Vehicles hood’s are generally unused wasted space.

After communicating with our customers, we learned that they hope to install a larger solar panel on the hood, but our existing standard models are not suitable, then we decided to custom a  flexible solar panel for their requests.

Accroding our customers gave us the size of the Toyota 4Runner hood, our engineer team design a 100W 22V Flexible Solar Panel. This solar panel will be available in a few days.

Why choose Lensun flexible solar panels for  vehicles’ hood?

1.All Lensun flexible solar panels first layer is ETFE Film, ETFE film has non-adhesive surface properties. Highly stain-resistant and easily gets cleaned by the rain.

The following picture of Lensun 20w and 30w flexible solar panel from our customer Paul, he installed a Lensun 50w flexible solar panel on his Nissan Xterra hood and 20w, 30w on the roof. He said “That’s real world pictures not cleaned just walked out at lunch, and took the pictures you want me to I wash them, they probably not been washed in over 3 months right there”

2. Lensun flexible solar panel is made of the strong black fiberglass back sheet, its more heat-dissipating and heat-resistant than the PET backsheet. Most flexible solar panels on the market use cheap PET backsheets. PET backsheets are not heat-resistant and are easily deformed and bulged.

The following is our customer’s answer why choose Lensun

Paul: “You guys make them all black and they’re a lot stronger not sure what that material is, but it holds up. When driving around winds blowing over it also, I have all these little white dings in the one on the hood still works great, the Renogy one I had on before last at 2 months and it broke on the hood” (Paul has a Renogy 100w foldable solar panel too)

Joey: “Good reviews and good price. Many are overpriced for what you get.”(He installed a Lensun 80w flexible solar panel on his Toyota FJ Curiser hood)

barnardtruffles: “Lensun had the best size, quality, and price of any flexible solar panel on the market. I’d love to try out your foldable panels too. My truck goes to around 6 off road shows a summer and gets so much attention just for the lensun solar on the hood.” (He installed a Lensun 80w flexible solar panel on his Toyota FJ Curiser hood)
